YUUmmy food at Yuu Japanese Tapas 優

IMG_9567
A few weeks ago, the yummy crew had an impromptu dinner meeting in Richmond. It was pretty late at night, but there is never a lack of good eateries in Richmond. Nabs thought that we would give Yuu a try. Yuu is a small restaurant in the Continental Plaza in Richmond (same as the second Deer Garden, Posh, Pearl Castle, etc.). Their offerings are a mix of contemporary Japanese “tapas” or small dishes as well various Asian mains. They also have quite an interesting dessert section as well.

We arrived around 9:15-30 or so and ended up being the last customers of the night. We were surprised to find that the place closed at 10:30PM every night when most other restaurants in the plaza opened until much later.

House of Tofu Soup

_MG_9150 copy
I’ve always been a huge fan of Korean kimchi and would order kimchi hotpot all the time at various bubble tea places. Richard’s store had Korean student work for a month during the summer. I badgered him to tell me where to find the best Korean food in Vancouver, and kept getting the disappointing answer of Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Coquitlam… Luckily, one of the places he mentioned – House of Tofu Soup, also has a location in Richmond. So we eagerly ventured there one evening in the summer (yes this post is very late…)

Foodtastic Richmond Night Market

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think Richmond Night Market?  If you’re like most people I know, its food.  Food food food.  Some more food.  A little bit of browsing, sprinkled with some shopping topped off with more food, followed by a little loitering and hanging out around some food.  Ok ok, I’m sure you get the point haha!  Well, the Yummy In Our Tummies crew was determined to make at least one visit to the Richmond Food Market, oh wait I mean Night Market to sample and eat some of the large variety of food available there.  So here we were, trying to find something to do on a nice Vancouver evening.

If you’re not a Night Market enthusiast, you might not know, but there are two locations of it in Richmond this year.  The old one is in the same location as before with free admission but paid parking but the new one, where we were headed, is near River Rock Casino where parking is free but entrance is by a $1.00 fee.  (Last I heard, the fee has gone up a few more cents).  Word of mouth has it that the food stalls are more or less the same in both of the Night Markets so we don’t plan on going to the old one, but if we do and we find something different, you’ll be sure to hear from us.

Red Rooster Encore

IMG_8180
So, after being disappointed with my first excursion at Red Rooster but only having tried a very small sample size of their menu with the Fish and Chips, I knew I wanted to go back and try more of their food. This time I was out to get pizza and feed the friends coming over. I now this isn't a specialty item still (chicken is their thing) so I'll probably go back again one more time before I'm done haha.
So we ordered 3 pizzas. A chicken, a meat lover, and a Hawaiian. This was the first time we had a meat lover pizza since there are very few halal pizza stores around this area, and we were stoked.

Kiyo Sushi hosts Eat Nabs Day

IMG_8318[15]
It was high time we had another Eat Nabs Day! This title is Turtle’s brainchild and originated 2 or 3 years ago as a label for Dine Out expeditions but the label had gone into hiding since. Due to popular demand, it was brought back as a label for a special dinner at Kiyo Sushi. Typical to our reputation, we spent a loooong time figuring out where to eat and were settled on Tandoori Kona but ended up changing our minds last minute and going to Kiyo Sushi instead. Impromptu FTW!

Anyway, Kiyo Sushi has always been on my radar, but I have never had the opportunity to go there. Ying and Rich have been there though and didn’t recall it being disappointing so we took their word for it and off we went. Eat Nabs Day was back!

Edible Bliss at Sushi House

IMG_8197 copy
I had the good fortune of lunching with Rich and Uncle Jimbo today at sushi house in Richmond. At 2 am the night before, Uncle Jimbo messaged me saying he was having a craving for spicy salmon sushi. Just outta the blue just like that. Haha weird eh? Anyhow, since it had been quite a while since I ate at sushi house and considering that its one of my favorite sushi places in Richmond, I settled on it pretty quick. And believe me, this place does not disappoint.

Crab Feast at Harbour Spirit Restaurant (王朝粤川海鲜酒楼)

_MG_8601 copy
Rich and I recently had dinner with his sister and her boyfriend for the first time. I remembered that I still had a voucher for a crab dinner for 3-4 people at Harbour Spirit Restaurant that was expiring within a week. Oh these vouchers! Harbour Spirit is located along busy No. 3 Road in Richmond, right beside Cactus Club by Lansdowne, taking over the old Sammy J Pepper building. It’s actually pretty unusual for a Chinese restaurant in Richmond to have its independent building, but the plus side was that it had plenty of parking! <3

Claypot – Dim Sum’ing~

IMG_7358 copy[4]_thumb[1]
So it was another one of those days when I had an extended lunch break followed by afternoon lectures. Rich had the evening shift that day, so he picked me up and we met up with Ringo for lunch. Rich was seriously craving claypot rice, and we really wanted to go to Soup.com (best claypot rice!). However, since that’s in Vancouver and our afternoon lectures are in Richmond, we opted for something a bit more local. We had passed the place called Claypot on Alexandria Road many times, but never ventured in as it is an all-you-can-eat hotpot place. Though judging by the name, Rich was convinced that he would be able to find claypot rice here as well.

Brunch at De Dutch (Richmond)

IMG_8426 copy
In honor of Coco’s arrival we were headed to De Dutch for breakfast. Why breakfast? Well I was having a craving for breakfast for a few days which had been going unsatisfied. I'd especially been drooling over the taste of hash browns. Mmm deep fried potato so good mmm. But there aren't too many breakfast places in Richmond and I m not really big on Ihop. and I've recently had White Spot breakfast. De Dutch had come up a few times in our conversations and we were surprised to find out it existed in Richmond. So De Dutch it was!!

~Very Good Berry Good~ Vol 1

IMG_8406 copy
Impromptu plans are often the most fun.  And this was the case on our visit to Berry Good in Richmond on this chilly Monday night.  One minute I'm getting ready to crack open chemistry in my PJ's and the next, I'm putting my pants back on and thinking about where I want to have dessert.  And I thought I wouldn't get anything sweet today!  ha!  We were quick to settle on Berry Good that night probably because none of us wanted bubble tea or ice cream and I was craving cheesecake instead.  I haven't discovered too many dessert places that serve good cheesecake, or cakes for that matter, in Richmond. Yavis Club and Berry Good were the only two places that came to mind at the time.  Seriously, I think we've overdone bubble tea and need to expand our dessert tastes haha.  And so Berry Good it was!

The Pig King–Butaya

IMG_7276 copy
IMG_7273 copy IMG_7278 copy
Why do I call it Pig King? That's what the Japanese characters (豚王) stands for. Butaya is a one of a kind Japanese style fried food restaurant. On the side of the eatery, an advertisement claims that they are the first of its kind in lower mainland. Indeed, everything on their menu is fried. We learned of this place through a friend (Ringo, who went on several food adventures with us). Today, Ying and I both had the afternoon off, so we decided to pay this place a visit! It's a small restaurant that can seat about 30 people at most. It was by no means upscale but the interior is clean, cozy, well lit and quite comfortable.

Bummer Dinner (fish n chips) at Red Rooster

IMG_8181
I suddenly had a hankering for fish and chips around 4 pm today and I tried to convince my parents to venture out to Steveston so we could have Pajos, but there is no convincing them out of their lazy Sunday afternoon state of being and so it was a lost cause. So then I made plans to hit up Pajos with my brothers and MooseMan and his brother, but turns out Pajos was closed by the time we decided to go. And so MooseMan and I attempted to decide on another food spot.

We went through a list of names and finally settled on Red Rooster. Why Red Rooster? Well, because there is a very apparent shortage of Halal restaurants in Richmond and when one does open up, word of mouth contagiously spreads the message around in the Halal-eating community. And Red Rooster opened up 9 days ago and is Halal so naturally, we were going to try it out.

S&W Pepper House (建鑫园)

IMG_8117 copy_thumb[1]
Now, we haven’t been to S & W Pepper House for many many years. This particular location in Richmond used to be called Southwestern Wind – hence the S & W in its name. The original location is in Burnaby’s Crystal Mall. I didn’t even notice that they had recently changed names until I came across a voucher online. It is situated in the heart of Richmond right across from Richmond Center on No. 3 Road. There is ample parking at the back, but you have to enter from Park Road. IMG_8066 copy_thumb[1]

Quick late night meal at Cattle Cafe (牛仔餐厅)

IMG_8190 copy
It was indeed a quick meal at Cattle Café. Ying just got off at Richmond General Hospital post-call and felt extremely hungry because she did not have time to have dinner. It’s 11:30pm… Where should we go? So I drove down Alexander Road in Richmond and found that Cattle Café was still open. To my surprise, on a Thursday, there were quite a number of people in there… You can clearly see that a great deal of thought was put into this café. To start, this place looks modern and clean. The lighting is soft and comfortable to the eyes. Unlike most HK café that use generic napkins and cups, Cattle had their logo printed on everything. Just these little touches can make a dining experience a lot more amiable.

New Spicy Chili Restaurant (小四川)

IMG_7920 copy
Uncle Tom is a long time friend of mine from back in pharmacy school. Since his birthday is coming up, we used this as an excuse to bring together all the old time buddy old pals from pharmacy school and have dinner. Now I have no idea why Uncle Tom is our uncle.. as he is only a year older than me and a few months older than Rich, but oh well~ We had originally planned to meet up for karaoke before dinner, but I was informed the previous night that Uncle Tom actually had to work that day. Typical! Since we wanted to try something new, we opted for New Spicy Chili Restaurant (小四川 - literally translated as Little Szechuan). This place has been around for a few years. My mother and I started coming here when it first opened. For a fact, the owner is from Szechuan because she spoke to us in Szechuan dialect before. When it was first opened, this place is known as Golden Spring Szechuan Restaurant. I suppose to distinguish itself from Golden Szechuan Restaurant (老四川), which is on the same No. 3 Rd, this new name is better. Finding a parking spot here is an absolute nuisance! The parking lot is small to begin with. To make matter worse, they are mostly reserved parking spots with orange cones on them if they are empty. One side of the parking lot is a narrow dead end. When you discovered that there is no parking, you have to turn your car around in a very small space. In short, the parking experience is absolutely horrid. I'd rather eat my hair than to park there again.

All You Can Eat Sushi–Ninkazu Japanese Restaurant

IMG_3510
It had been a weird day ever since I woke up at 12 noon (I have no shame in saying that, and I bet you woke up +/- 1 hour of my waking time too) because I went through at least 3 different food cravings over 8 hours.  First, I craved the beef fried rice from Green Leaf.  Then I craved fast food and fries.  Third, I wanted to eat cake.  At the end of it all, I got none of those and settled on sushi.  Which totally makes sense if you think about it.  Anyways, back in school days I organized many an ayce outing to Tomokazu on W. Broadway near Oak when I had grown used to sushi.
Then Ninkazu opened up.  Owned by the same people and considered a higher end sister store of Tomokazu, Ninkazu makes its home in prime real estate in downtown Richmond just across from Aberdeen mall.  Since then, my sushi tastes had broadened and I discovered better sushi, so I hadn’t come here for a while.  Ninkazu remains one of my favourite places for ayce sushi and reminiscing those days, I was headed here tonight.

Bubble World (大頭仔) – Richmond

IMG_7795 copy
Bubble World or (大頭仔) is probably one of the most recognized bubble tea places in the lower mainland, with multiple locations in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster and Coquitlam. We’ve been to quite a number of their locations as well, but the Richmond branch seems to be most commonly visited one for us. This place is SUPER busy at night, often packed with teenagers hanging out with their friends. In fact, it’s turned us away several times with quotes of 30-45 minute waits. Anyhow, the Yummy crew met up with Turtle, Wei-Gor and Chank for some late night snacks and bubble tea. Turtle and Wei-Gor showed up first and managed to secure us a table within 10 minutes or so. Mr. Chank was working late, so they were showing up later.

Bubble World is basically a typical Taiwanese place, serving various bubble tea and other beverages as well as set meals. Thus, there are two menus: the drink menu (see right picture) and the food menu (see above picture). They offer a variety of snacks, rice and noodle dishes as well as sandwiches and hotpots. With regards to drinks, there’s the typical flavoured red/green teas and milk teas as well as fresh fruit, ice cream as well as shaved ice.

The Dynasty of Chinese Food – Dinesty!

IMG_7774 copy
Yesterday, my ma and pa were going back to Hong Kong. Of course, being the good son that I am, I decided to have Ying treat us all to lunch before they take off! Since Dinesty (聚) was closed for a celebration party the other night (see Top Shanghai post), we decided to come again in search of yummy Chinese food :D

Casual Chinese Dining – Big Feast at Top Shanghai

IMG_7557 copy
It is the time of the year when my parents are back from Hong Kong and they usually like to treat Ying’s family to dinner at a restaurant (because my mother dear, unlike Ying’s mom, cannot cook). Ying and I thought high and low and decided to pay Dinesty a visit after reading so many raving reviews. Reservations at Dinesty is a must, so they say, but no one picked up the phone. Therefore, I decided to just show up! Alas, it was closed to a staff celebration party… Bearing such great disappointment, I was in no mood to look up another place to try. So we walked across the street to visit this trusty Shanghai cuisine restaurant that hasn’t disappointed me since day one.
Top Shanghai Cuisine Restaurant (上海一只鼎) is a modest looking diner situated in the Pricemart Foods plaza of Ackroyd and No. 3 Rd. This place has been here forever and ever. I was in high school when I first visited this place (and that’s over 7 years ago). The exterior has been roughly the same since then (and they really should put up new decorative pictures outside because their current ones are faded in color). Parking is abundant and freeeeeee :D

Tongue-Numbing Lunch @ Golden Szechuan Restaurant

IMG_7496 copy

IMG_7467 copy
Golden Szechuan Restaurant is amongst one of Ying's favourite. Ying always has this obsession of eating spicy food. The more painful her tongue gets, the more pleasurable she finds the experience. One of these days, I will develop a stomach ulcer chasing her dream with her. Golden Szechuan Restaurant has been around for many years and we come back year after year. Its management seems to have changed over the years. They shift their focus from a family oriented eatery to a  higher scale diner. The price has drastically gone up as well compared to the last time we were there (a year ago?). For example, their good value lunch special is no longer available.
IMG_7493 copy
Now this is actually their second location - with their first being located in Vancouver. The original Golden Szechuan (or "Old Szechuan" in literal translation) was on Broadway and Burrard - close to the Future Shop there, and home of Posh now. It had been mainly a hotpot restaurant - featuring the famous tongue-numbing Szechuan hotpot base. Ying recalls that it was one of the first "authentic" Szechuan restaurants that opened in Vancouver and her family had been very eager to try it. In fact, they frequently went there to buy the hotpot soup base ($8 or so) and had their own hotpot at home. The restaurant became quite popular, so they expanded to Richmond in its current location beside Tom Lee in what used to be Knight and Day across from Yaohan. Eventually, the Vancouver location closed down and they no longer offered hotpot. Oh, one more thing, this place was voted as best Szechuan/Hunan restaurant in the Diner's Choice of the 2011 Chinese Restaurant Awards.
